STUDY AREAS/SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH – Blepharoplastic surgery

WHAT IS IT AND HOW IS IT TREATED

La BLEPHAROPLASTY is a plastic surgery procedure for reconstructing or correcting the eyelids. It is carried out to remove bags above and below the eyes, reduce wrinkles and make the face less heavy and sad. Sometimes it can facilitate sight and make the eye less susceptible to tiring.

Over the years the tone and shape of the tissues tend to change. Normally swelling around and below the eyes indicates excessive accumulation of fluids in the surrounding skin tissue, called oedema. As the skin around the eyes is softer than the rest of the body, the swelling can be quite noticeable and for the same reason bags below the eyes are often accompanied by discolouration.

The intervention improves the aesthetic appearance and functionality of the eyelids, removing and remodelling the skin, muscle tissue and excessive fat. The type and quantity of the excess tissue to act on vary per case, according to the objective situation, the patient’s needs, the shape and proportions of the entire face.

The type of intervention has to be valued with the physician for a harmonic result and to obtain the desired face’s rejuvenation. Also, the health and functionality of the eyes are key aspects to consider.

For this reason, it is fundamental that the surgeon operating knows the anatomy and physiology of the eye area perfectly.

The procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthesia. There is no invasive technique and the patient can return to carrying out normal daily activities in a few days.

Blepharoplasty does not remove crows’ feet, i.e. the lines at the side of eyes, which are only improved indirectly via the stretching of the eyelids.

WE RECOMMEND

  • protecting the area around the eyes from UV damage
  • maintaining a correct lifestyle and appropriate diet
